FAQ
Soap and ingredients
What makes Cool Chimp Soap different?
The short answer? You, our customer. You choose quality over hype, confidence over clichés, and self-care without apology. Like us, you don't buy into the idea that being "manly" means neglecting yourself (or your feelings), masking everything with aggression, or pretending you don't care.
Is Cool Chimp Soap handmade?
Yes, our soaps are handmade in small batches.
Where is Cool Chimp Soap made?
Cool Chimp Soap is made in Georgetown, Ontario, Canada.
Do you offer samples of your products?
At this time, we do not.
What does "cold process soap" mean?
Cold process soap is made by mixing oils and butters with a lye solution, then allowing the soap to harden and cure naturally over several weeks (4-6). This slow process creates a glycerin-rich bar with a rich lather and skin-conditioning properties. Once cured, there's no active lye left.
How is it different from regular soap?
Cold-process soap is a traditional, handcrafted soap made by mixing oils or fats with lye and water, allowing a natural chemical reaction (saponification) to turn them into soap and glycerin. Unlike many commercial “regular” soaps, which are often detergent-based and made with high-heat industrial processes, cold-process soap is not cooked during production and is cured slowly over several weeks. This method preserves naturally occurring glycerin, making the soap generally more moisturizing and gentle on the skin, and it allows for simpler ingredients and small-batch customization rather than mass-produced uniform bars.
What ingredients do you use?
We use sustainably sourced ingredients such as Olive, Coconut, Palm (RSPO), and Castor oils to name a few, all from a reputable supplier. Some of our bars also contain Shea butter or Aloe Vera Juice as well. You may also find Colloidal Oatmeal or Alkanet Root Powder in some of our bars (check out our ingredients' appendix for a full breakdown).
Is your soap free from parabens, sulfates, and phthalates?
Yes.
How long do one of your bars of soap last?
A single bar should typically last a minimum of 21 showers.
Is your soap hypoallergenic?
No. Our products are not classified as hypoallergenic.
Is your soap antibacterial?
Our soaps are not classified as antibacterial.
Do you use essential oils or fragrance oils?
We use both. Some of our bars contain 100% essential oils, while others contain 100% fragrance oil. Certain bars may contain a mix of the 2. Only bars scented exclusively (100%) with essential oils can be marked as 100% natural.
What is the difference between essential and fragrance oils?
Essential oils are naturally derived from plants - extracted from flowers, leaves, bark, or peels. They offer authentic, natural scents but can be lighter, fade faster in cold process soap, and are limited to what nature provides. Essential oils do contain therapeutic qualities that can calm or energize, and this can bring an entirely new experience to your shower.
Fragrance oils are carefully formulated scent blends. They allow for more complex, consistent, and longer-lasting scents that often can't be achieved with essential oils alone - especially in cold process soap.
*Both can be safe and skin-friendly when properly formulated and used at correct levels (we follow strict IFRA guidelines). What matters most isn't whether a scent is "natural" or "synthetic", but how it's used.
Are your soaps natural?
*Our bars scented exclusively with essential oils are 100% natural.
We focus on quality and performance first, not buzzwords.
Our soaps are made using real oils and butters, and we scent them with essential oils, fragrance oils, or a blend of both, depending on what works best for the bar. Essential oils come from plants, while fragrance oils are carefully formulated for consistency, safety, and scent longevity in cold process soap.
Everything we use is approved for cosmetic use and used within safe guidelines. What matters most to us is how the soap performs on your skin - not whether it fits into a single marketing label.
How strong is the scent in your bars?
Our bars have a light to medium scent. They smell noticeable before and when you use them, but the fragrance doesn’t linger strongly or for more than 20 minutes or so on the skin after rinsing.
Are your soaps cruelty-free?
Yes. Neither the finished product nor its ingredients are tested on animals.
Do your soaps contain Palm Oil?
Yes. We use RSPO palm oil in our soaps.
What is RSPO palm oil?
RSPO stands for Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil. Palm oil is a common ingredient in soap, but conventional palm oil production can harm rainforests, wildlife and communities. RSPO-certified palm oil is grown and sourced responsibly following strict environmental and social standards. By using RSPO palm oil, we can include the benefits of palm oil in soap - like hardness and lather - while minimizing harm to our planet.
Do you use lye in your soap?
Yes. You can't make soap without it. Lye (sodium hydroxide) is a key ingredient in cold process soap. It reacts with oils and butters through a process called saponification to create soap. While lye is caustic in its raw form, once the soap has cured properly, there's no lye left - only a safe, long-lasting bar of soap.
Is your soap good for dry skin?
Yes. One of the benefits of coldprocess soap is that it retains glycerin, a natural humectant that attracts and locks in moisture. We also use skin-conditioning oils and butters that help nourish and protect your skin.
Can I use your soap on my face?
While our bars are not typically formulated for your face, many cold process soaps are gentle enough for facial use, thanks to their natural glycerin and skin-conditioning oils. The face is more delicate than the body, so we recommend choosing bars with mild oils, fewer exfoliants, and no overpowering scents. As always, if you have particularly sensitive or reactive skin, it's a good idea to do a patch test first.
How do I make my bar last longer?
To get the most out of our soap bars, we recommend keeping them dry between uses. Use a well-draining soap dish or rack so water doesn't pool around the bar.
Quality & Craftsmanship
Are your soaps handmade?
Yes—each bar is handmade in small batches using cold-process soapmaking, which allows us to carefully control ingredients and quality.
Do you cure your soaps, and why does that matter?
Yes—we cure our soaps for several weeks. This curing time helps the soap become milder, improves lather, and ensures the bar lasts longer in the shower.
Why are there slight variations between bars?
Because our soaps are handmade in small batches, slight variations in color, pattern, or size naturally occur. Each bar is still made with the same ingredients and quality standards.
Why does cold-process soap cost more than store-bought soap?
Cold-process soap usually costs more than store-bought soap because it’s handmade in small batches using higher-quality ingredients and a much slower process. Artisan soap makers use real oils and butters and keep the naturally occurring glycerin in the bar, whereas many commercial soaps are mass-produced with cheaper ingredients and optimized for speed and shelf life. Cold-process soap also requires weeks of curing, hands-on labor, and careful quality control, so you’re paying for craftsmanship, ingredient quality, and a gentler, longer-lasting bar—not just a factory-made cleanser.
